Eno - Original Soundtrack [Brian Eno]

The companion to one of the most groundbreaking documentary films ever made about a musician, and a remarkable career retrospective in its own right. Directed by Gary Hustwit and premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Eno is the first authorized documentary about Brian Eno, one of the most influential and genuinely visionary figures in the history of modern music. The film is itself a fitting tribute to its subject: compiled from hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage, unreleased music, and interviews, it employs bespoke generative software to dynamically sequence scenes and create transitions in real time, ensuring that no two screenings are ever the same. A film about a pioneer of generative music that is itself generative.

The soundtrack draws on 14 albums spanning the full arc of Eno's 50-year career, from early solo adventures like Another Green World and Taking Tiger Mountain through landmark collaborations and forward into his most recent work. The 17 tracks gathered here tell the story of a musician who began as an original member of Roxy Music, pioneered the ambient genre with Ambient 1: Music for Airports, produced some of the most important albums of the last five decades including records by David Bowie, Talking Heads, U2, and Coldplay, and composed what may be the most widely heard piece of music in the world, the Microsoft Windows startup sound.

Collaborators represented include David Byrne on "Regiment" and "Everything That Happens," John Cale on the gorgeous "Spinning Away," Fred again on "Cmon," Cluster on "Ho Renomo," Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams on "Emerald and Lime," Tom Rogerson on "Motion In Field," and brother Roger Eno on a deeply moving live recording of "By This River" captured at the Acropolis in Athens in 2022. Three previously unreleased recordings complete the collection, including "Lighthouse #429," drawn from Eno's Sonos radio station The Lighthouse and receiving its first ever public release here, alongside "All I Remember" and the instrumental "Hardly Me."

As Eno himself has said of his creative process: "Picasso once said: Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. I don't wait to be inspired. I start working and if I'm lucky I become inspired. And if I'm not lucky I keep at it until my luck changes." Eno, the soundtrack, is evidence of fifty years of that philosophy in practice.
