Echo & The Bunnymen have not released an album of new songs since 2014's Meteorites. Apples For Isaac ends that wait, and it arrives with a bittersweet footnote: Blondie's Clem Burke plays drums on all but one track, and he died during the making of it.
Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant still sound like nobody else, all reverb-drenched guitar and grand, doomy melody. Lead single "Brussels Is Haunted" sets the tone, and "Take Me by the Hand," "The Honey," and the closing "We Prayed in the Dark" show a band leaning into atmosphere rather than chasing their old singles.
Forty-five years after Crocodiles, the Liverpool band remain one of post-punk's most romantic and least compromising acts.
