Twenty-five years on, Sinner remains one of the most viscerally powerful debut albums in the history of heavy rock. Released on June 5, 2001 on Wind-up Records and produced by Jay Baumgardner at Ocean Recording in Burbank, California, the album debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and earned platinum certification in less than three months, announcing Dallas, Texas's Drowning Pool as one of the most ferocious new forces in hard rock.
At the center of it all is "Bodies," one of the most instantly recognizable songs of the nu-metal era. Built around its pummeling, chant-ready refrain and fueled by Dave Williams' electrifying vocals, the track became a fixture in sports arenas, films, video games, and mosh pits the world over. As Williams himself explained, the song was always about cathartic release, about forgetting the weight of the week while honoring an unspoken code of mutual respect on the floor. "Tear Away," "Sinner," and "All Over Me" round out an album that balances raw intensity with genuine emotional depth throughout its 11 tracks.
Sinner is also the only album to feature Williams, who passed away from a heart condition in August 2002 at just 30 years old, just one day after "Sinner" was released as the album's final single. His voice and presence run through every track, a reminder of a talent that left far too soon.
This limited 25th anniversary edition, pressed on sea blue smoke vinyl from Craft Recordings, is a fitting celebration of one of heavy rock's most enduring debut albums.
