Take a trip back to the 80s, when the conservative revolution was in full swing, MTV actually played videos, and jocks were only starting to invade punk shows. Released in 1985, Frankenchrist is the Dead Kennedys' most ambitious and controversial departure. Moving away from the high-velocity hardcore of their early years, the band embraced a progressive, psychedelic sound—incorporating spaghetti-Western horns and atmospheric textures while maintaining the razor-sharp political exegesis of Jello Biafra.
This album is famously the "Real Deal" of punk history, notorious for the 1986 obscenity trial that nearly bankrupted the band and their label, Alternative Tentacles. The legal battle was triggered by the inclusion of a poster featuring H.R. Giger’s Landscape #XX (known as "Penis Landscape"). While the trial eventually ended in a hung jury, the case remains a landmark in the fight against censorship and the "Porn Rock" hysteria of the Reagan era. Songs like "M.T.V. − Get Off the Air" and the epic "Stars and Stripes of Corruption" offer some of the most powerful political statements ever committed to vinyl, proving that their incredible songwriting sounds as timeless and relevant today as it did four decades ago.
This 2025/2026 vinyl reissue restores the classic 1985 production with its amazing guitars and rich, organic sound. Housed in a gatefold sleeve, it captures the era when the Dead Kennedys were at the very center of the culture wars, fighting for the soul of artistic expression.
