Released in 1993, Into The Labyrinth stands as one of Dead Can Dance’s most successful and enduring achievements. The title—a nod to the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur—captures the album's sprawling, exploratory nature. Recorded during a period of deep personal transition, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard wrote much of the material independently across separate continents. This isolation led to a remarkable creative purity; engineered and produced by Perry at his Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, it was the first DCD album where the duo played every instrument themselves, without guest musicians.
The result is a landmark of "audiophile" production, beloved for its immense dynamic range and deep, resonant bass. The record masterfully bridges the gap between ancient cultural lineages and modern technology, weaving together Aboriginal polyrhythms, Celtic spiritualism, and Middle Eastern textures. From the staggering percussive pulse of "Yulunga (Spirit Dance)" to the haunting, unaccompanied beauty of Gerrard’s "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" and Perry’s melancholic, brass-inflected "The Carnival Is Over," the album is a vivid tapestry of human experience.
This 2025/2026 4AD reissue is presented as a Double LP in a premium gatefold jacket. In keeping with the definitive 2016 remaster, this version features brand new cover artwork (the "Hands of the World" photography by Touhami Ennadre) and an altered track sequence designed specifically for the vinyl format. To ensure a comprehensive listening experience, the set includes the bonus tracks "Bird" and "Spirit" (originally from the A Passage in Time compilation) on Side D.
