Ivan Pavlov has spent decades as Coh making some of the most singular electronic music around, and Iron, first released in 2000, is one of the most playful records in his catalog. It is a love letter to 1980s heavy metal that contains no riffs at all.
Pavlov has explained that the album grew from his teenage passion for metal and a fixation on one specific thing: the mid-range grain of distorted guitar. Rather than imitate the genre's volume or structure, he distilled that texture into eight glitchy, humming pieces with titles like "For Whom the Dell Falls" and "Spiegel I'm Spiegel."
Clever, abrasive, and oddly warm, it still sounds like nothing else a quarter century on.
Back on vinyl via We Are Busy Bodies, out October 30. A great one for fans of experimental electronics.
