Originally released in November 1984, Treasure is the third studio album from Scottish legends Cocteau Twins, and the moment the band’s legacy was set in stone. It marked the formalization of their definitive trio lineup: the incomparable Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist and sonic architect Robin Guthrie, and the then-newly recruited Simon Raymonde on bass. Often cited as one of the most influential "dream pop" records ever made, Treasure saw the band fully shed their post-punk skin to embrace a lush, cavernous, and otherworldly atmosphere that would redefine alternative music for decades.
The album is famous for its "hieroglyphic" nature—Fraser famously moved away from literal English lyrics toward a phonetic, abstract language of pure emotion. Each track title is a Victorian or mythological-sounding name, from the driving, crystalline shimmer of "Lorelei" to the epic, choral swell of the closer "Donimo." Despite Guthrie famously referring to the album as "half-baked" at the time, it was hailed by critics as a "textural masterpiece," reaching the UK Top 30 and cementing their status as the crown jewels of the 4AD label.
This 2018 reissue, which remains the definitive modern pressing as of 2026, was remastered from high-definition files transferred from the original analog tapes. Pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl, the remastering restores the "pillowy" reverb and intricate guitar layers with stunning clarity. Housed in its iconic 23 Envelope designed sleeve, this edition captures the "proto-Twin Peaks" vibes and alien beauty of a record that Robert Smith of The Cure famously listened to while getting ready for his wedding day.
