The Moon and the Melodies is a unique record in the Cocteau Twins’ catalog—ethereal even by their standards and mostly instrumental. It’s shaped by the free-form improvisations of ambient pioneer Harold Budd, who came into their orbit almost by chance. Released the same year as their atmospheric album Victorialand, this collaboration hinted at a new direction for the band, though one they never actually pursued again.

Nearly forty years later, this album is getting its first vinyl reissue, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie himself. The collaboration’s origin is a bit mysterious—some remember being approached by Channel 4 for a film project pairing musicians from different genres, while Budd thought his publisher connected them after the band showed interest in one of his songs. The film never happened, but the musicians hit it off instantly when they met in the band’s new studio and created something truly special over two weeks.

The Moon and the Melodies has developed a passionate following, with its atmospheric tracks often featured in ambient DJ sets. The song “Sea, Swallow Me” remains one of the Cocteau Twins’ most streamed tracks. The album’s charm lies in its spontaneity—a genuine moment captured between friends who simply enjoyed making music together.
