After touring Screen Violence, Chvrches stepped away in 2023, and for a while it was fair to wonder what would come next. All The King’s Men is the answer: the fifth studio album from Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, and their first new record in more than five years. It also finds the Glasgow trio taking the biggest creative swing of their career.
Where Screen Violence was pieced together remotely, this time all three members reconvened in Glasgow and wrote in a run of intense three-week sessions, recording in a converted church. The sound that came out of those rooms is sharper and more guitar-driven than anything in their catalog, built on more acoustic instruments than they have ever used, with the band’s gift for huge, emotional hooks still front and center. Lead single “Roses” opens the record with a bang, while “Overthinker” shows its tender side.
Lyrically, the album turns its gaze homeward. Having spent years living and working in the United States, the band look back at Britain and Scotland with fresh eyes, digging into the culture and history of the place, uglier corners included. The result across 11 tracks is a self-consciously British record that sounds like a band rediscovering what makes them tick, and one fans won’t see coming.
This indie retail exclusive presents All The King’s Men on apple color vinyl, available only through independent record stores. Out January 22, 2027 on Futures Music Group.
