Long before she was the voice of a cultural summer, Charli XCX was a teenager from Hertfordshire playing London warehouse raves and posting songs online. True Romance, her 2013 debut album, gathered those years into a single moody, glittering statement and announced a pop writer with a sound entirely her own.
The record leans dark and dreamy, built on chilly synths, hazy drum machines and Charli's knack for a hook that sticks on first listen. "Nuclear Seasons" opens with a goth-tinged rush, "You (Ha Ha Ha)" flips a Gold Panda sample into a bratty breakup anthem, and "Stay Away," "What I Like" and "You're The One" show off her gift for melodies that sound sweet and bruised at once. Ariel Rechtshaid and Patrik Berger are among the producers shaping its lush, nocturnal atmosphere.
It was a cult record on release, but it has aged into something more: a blueprint for the left-field pop she would perfect a decade later, and a favorite among fans who were there from the start.
