Cake - Fashion Nugget

Cake arrived in 1996 with a sound nobody else was making: deadpan half-spoken vocals, a lounge-lizard trumpet line where a guitar solo should be, and a rhythm section locked so tight it feels mechanical. Fashion Nugget was the record that made that formula inescapable, and thirty years on it still sounds like nothing before or since.

"The Distance" is the song everyone knows, a sports-announcer fever dream riding a bassline that refuses to let up. The album's real range shows up elsewhere. "Frank Sinatra" opens on woozy strings before John McCrea starts cataloguing suburban dread, "Italian Leather Sofa" stretches a portrait of a bad marriage into six minutes of slow-burn menace, and Vincent Di Fiore's trumpet threads through all of it like a commentary track. The covers are the tell: a straight-faced disco reading of "I Will Survive," a bossa nova turn on "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps," and a closing Willie Nelson song played completely sincerely.

What holds it together is McCrea's writing, which refuses sentiment and finds real feeling anyway. Greg Brown's guitar stays clean and spiky, Todd Roper's drums never overplay, and the band sounds like it is sharing a private joke you are welcome to join.

This is the 2022 remaster pressed on 180-gram vinyl for RCA, cut from a fresh transfer and housed in a faithful reproduction of the original jacket. The Sacramento band's breakthrough, and the one Cake record to own if you only own one.
