The Butthole Surfers' vaults were always going to be a strange place, and Humpty Dumpty LSD opens them wide. Originally released in 2002, it compiles odds and ends from the San Antonio band's mid-1980s imperial phase, when they were the most unhinged act in the American underground.
The collection finds the band in full-on gonzo glory, their cup flowing over with acid-rock madness: tape-manipulated freakouts, live chaos, alternate takes and studio experiments that never made the official albums. Tracks like "I Hate My Job," "Concubine Solo" and an alternate "Sherman" sit alongside early versions of songs fans know from the classic records.
It is not the place to start with the Buttholes, but for anyone already hooked on Locust Abortion Technician or Hairway to Steven, it is an essential, wildly entertaining deep dive.
Newly reissued by Matador, it is spread across two LPs.
