Released in March 1967, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits was the first compilation of his career, and it remains the single best argument for how much ground one songwriter covered in five years. Ten tracks, every Top 40 single he had scored through 1967, and a straight line from a kid with an acoustic guitar to the man who plugged in and never looked back.
Side one moves from the ramshackle "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" through "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," and "It Ain't Me Babe" before landing on "Like a Rolling Stone." Side two is the electric run: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "I Want You," "Positively 4th Street," and "Just Like a Woman." Three of these were never issued as US singles at all, which tells you plenty about how the charts handled Dylan in the sixties.
The album peaked at number 10 in the United States and number 3 in the UK, and it has served as Dylan's de facto sixties singles collection ever since. For a lot of listeners it is still the first Dylan record they ever owned.
This Columbia/Legacy vinyl edition includes a large reproduction of Milton Glaser's original foldout poster, the psychedelic silhouette that became one of the most recognizable pieces of rock art ever made, plus a digital download.
