Billy Strings has spent the last few years being the most technically overwhelming guitar player in American roots music and, increasingly, a songwriter who does not need the technique to carry a record. So Much For Goodbyes, out on Reprise in August 2026, leans hard into the second thing.

Sixteen songs across four sides, recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville, and the flatpicking that made his live shows legendary is used sparingly enough that it lands when it arrives. "Lucid Daydream" and "Ethereal"-adjacent longer cuts give the band room to stretch the way they do onstage. "Mill Town Flood" and "Wrestling An Angel" are the story songs, built in the old bluegrass shape — a place, a disaster, a moral left mostly unstated. "Debra's Waltz" closes the record as an instrumental, which is its own kind of statement from a man who could have ended on a showpiece.

Strings has been open about wanting to be judged as a writer rather than as a phenomenon. This is the record that makes that a reasonable request.

Double LP on 140 gram vinyl from Reprise Records.
