By 1995, Ani DiFranco had spent years on the road building an audience the hard way, releasing every record herself on Righteous Babe, the label she started at nineteen in Buffalo, New York. Not a Pretty Girl, her sixth studio album, was the moment that independence became a statement, and it turned her into a hero for a generation of listeners who heard their own lives in her songs.
The sound is stripped to the bone: DiFranco's percussive, punk-schooled acoustic guitar and Andy Stochansky's drums, nothing more. Later records would bring in electric guitar, horns and full bands, but the raw intensity of this duo setup is the whole point here. "32 Flavors" became one of her best-loved songs, a quietly defiant portrait of being overlooked, while "Shy," "Worthy," "Cradle and All" and the title track swing from wry humor to outright fury.
Arriving a year before her breakthrough Dilate, the album remains a touchstone of the DIY movement and a cornerstone of her catalog, proof that an artist could keep total creative control and still connect on a massive scale.
This 30th Anniversary indie exclusive features a new 2025 vinyl remaster on two purple translucent LPs, housed in a heavy-stock, vertically oriented gatefold with a soft-touch matte finish, repackaged by Grammy-winning art director Brian Grunert. Inside are a 12-page booklet and a 12-inch art photo print of Ani shot by Mark Dellas.
