Stomping the Phantom Brake Pedal is the odds and ends record that turned out to be more interesting than most bands' proper albums. Released as a double EP in late 2012, it collects The Score Evolved, three instrumental pieces written for the Love film project, alongside Love Two Re-Imagined, a set of remixes and reworkings of the band's own material.
The instrumental side is the surprise. "Reel 1 (Diary)" and "Reel 5 (New Blood)" are patient, cinematic pieces that sound like a band who spent a decade wishing they were writing film scores and finally got permission. The remix side flips the perspective, stripping songs like "Surrender," "Anxiety," and "Saturday Love" down to their bones and rebuilding them with Ilan Rubin handling much of the reconstruction. Produced by Tom DeLonge with Aaron Rubin and Jeff "Critter" Newell, and mastered by Brian Gardner.
For a band whose reputation rests on stadium sized reverb and earnest anthems, this is the release that shows the machinery underneath. It has quietly become one of the most sought after titles in the AVA discography.
This indie retail exclusive reissue presses the double EP onto a single clear LP, mastered at Bernie Grundman and pressed in Canada. A limited color run of a record that has been out of print for years.
