Very few debuts arrive fully formed. Songs In A Minor did. Released in June 2001, when Alicia Keys was just twenty, it opened with a classical piano prelude and then spent an hour proving that a young songwriter could draw on classical training, vintage soul and hip-hop production all at once and make it sound like one voice.

"Fallin'" was the song that stopped everyone in their tracks, a gospel-soaked ballad built on a single piano figure that went all the way to number one on the Hot 100. "A Woman's Worth" followed it into the top ten, and deeper cuts like "Girlfriend," "Rock Wit U" and her reading of Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me" show how easily she moved between old-school soul and contemporary R&B.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell more than twelve million copies worldwide. At the 2002 Grammys it won five awards, including Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "Fallin'" and Best R&B Album, tying the record for the most wins by a woman in a single night.

This tenth anniversary edition presents the album across two 180-gram LPs, giving the piano and those layered vocals the room they deserve.
