Few debut albums have changed music as completely and irreversibly as this one. Released on April 23, 1976, the Ramones' self-titled first record arrived like a thunderbolt at one of rock and roll's lowest ebbs, stripping everything back to the bare essentials and rebuilding the music from the ground up. Four chords, simple and catchy melodies, a sped-up tempo, and gloriously inane lyrics delivered with total conviction. Twenty-nine minutes. Fourteen songs. Everything had changed.
Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy Ramone crystallized the musical ideals of an entire movement in a single record. Other bands had set the stage before them, and others would push the energy further after, but it was the Ramones who defined what punk rock actually sounded like at its most pure and essential. The Clash, the Sex Pistols, Green Day, The Offspring, and thousands of bands in between have all traced a direct line back to this album and the blueprint it laid down.
Though mainstream financial success largely eluded them throughout their career, the Ramones released 21 live and studio albums over two decades, built one of the most devoted fan bases in rock history, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. The legacy of this debut, however, towers above all of it. It is not simply a great punk album. It is the punk album, and one of the most important records ever made.
This limited 180g vinyl pressing is the definitive way to own a true landmark of American music.
