The Ramones' second album arrived in January 1977 like a freight train that had somehow gotten even faster. Produced by Tony Bongiovi and Tommy Ramone — with engineering from Ed Stasium, who would become a long-time collaborator — Leave Home built on the raw energy of their debut with sharper production and tempos that left little room to breathe.
Written hot on the heels of their first album, the progression is immediately apparent: the songs hit harder, move quicker, and land with more confidence. The record is loaded with Ramones classics — the sneering swagger of "Swallow My Pride," the beloved crowd-chant anthem "Pinhead," the buzzsaw romp of "Suzy is a Headbanger," and a gloriously trashy cover of "California Sun." And then there's "Carbona Not Glue" — controversial enough to be pulled from some pressings, which only made it more essential.
If Ramones was the blueprint, Leave Home was proof they could do it again — and then some.
