Nirvana - Nevermind

The vinyl edition of Nirvana’s hit album Nevermind, which helped usher in the grunge era of the 1990s.

Nevermind is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, it was the band's first release on DGC Records. Frontman Kurt Cobain aimed to create music that broke free from the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing inspiration from bands like the Pixies and their use of “loud/quiet” dynamics.

The album marked the debut of drummer Dave Grohl with Nirvana. Despite modest commercial expectations from both the band and the label, Nevermind became a breakout success in late 1991—driven largely by the popularity of its lead single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” By January 1992, the album had reached number one on the Billboard 200, dethroning Michael Jackson’s Dangerous.

Nevermind also spawned three additional hit singles: “Come as You Are,” “Lithium,” and “In Bloom.” The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the album Diamond, with over 10 million units shipped in the U.S., and total worldwide sales exceeding 30 million.

Widely credited with bringing alternative rock into the mainstream, Nevermind has consistently ranked among the greatest albums of all time in publications such as Rolling Stone and Time.
