Few moments in jazz history carry the weight of John Coltrane picking up the soprano saxophone for the first time on record. Released in 1961 on Atlantic Records, My Favorite Things is the album where that happened, and nothing in jazz would ever be quite the same afterward. The instrument would become one of Coltrane's most powerful and personal voices for the remainder of his career.

The title track is the centerpiece and one of the most transformative performances in the jazz canon. Taking the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune from The Sound of Music and stretching it into a hypnotic, modal exploration that bears little resemblance to its source material, Coltrane turned a familiar melody into something vast, searching, and genuinely new. It was a performance he would return to in live settings for the rest of his life, and it never lost its power.

This Rhino Reserve edition gives the album the treatment it deserves. Cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed on 180g black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing, it is as close to a definitive physical edition of a definitive jazz album as you are likely to find.
