Bergsonist - Depths

Few artists working in electronic music today are doing something as genuinely singular as Bergsonist. For more than a decade, Moroccan-born New York artist Selwa Abd has used the moniker to examine postcolonial identity and speculative temporalities across sound, image, video, and installation, while also serving as a vital force in the New York underground through her mutual aid and community platforms Pick Up the Flow and BizaarBazaar.

Released on Dark Entries, Depths is her sixth LP and continues the project of ancestral reconnection that defined her 2025 album ASL أصل ⴰⵙⵍ, which drew on field recordings captured in Morocco exploring her Amazigh heritage. Abd approaches the work with a directness that is both disarming and powerful: "I really use making music as therapy, not as a precious act, more as an energy release that makes me feel alive." That excess of vitality is all over this record.

The 12 tracks move fluidly across territory that is difficult to map and easy to get lost in. "Trust the Current," "Depths," and "Underwater World Pursuit" showcase her diasporic techno-futurism, where James Stinson-esque atmospherics meet Moroccan rhythms in ways that feel genuinely new. "Again" and "Higher" push into coldwave territory, icy arpeggios and electroid beats beneath Abd's ethereal vocals, while "Breakthrough" and "Ode to Life" deliver the kind of skewed peak-hour dancefloor energy only Bergsonist can bring.

Artwork by Eloise Leigh incorporates photographs by Abd and Greg Zifcak taken in Morocco, and the package includes a protection poster featuring an Amazigh symbol used for warding off the evil eye. Elegant, DIY, and deeply alive.
