New Zealand's most quietly singular artist returns with her fifth album, and it may be her most rewarding yet. Released on 4AD and Flying Nun Records, Train On The Island was co-produced with longtime collaborator John Parish at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales, where the pair have now made four albums together, and the chemistry between them has never sounded more intuitive or assured.
Across 10 tracks, Harding crafts music that makes sense the way a dream does: not logically, not cleanly, but with a strange internal certainty where everything feels right even if nothing quite adds up. It is her most direct album yet while remaining utterly, defiantly her own, baffling and dazzling in equal measure. Lead single "One Stop" announced the record's arrival with fierce, kinetic energy, while tracks like "I Ate the Most," "Venus in the Zinnia," and the spare, haunting "Riding That Symbol" showcase the full range of her vision.
A remarkable ensemble of musicians shapes the album's rich sonic palette, including pedal steel player Joe Harvey-Whyte, harpist Mali Llywelyn, synth artist Thomas Poli, drummer Sebastian Rochford of Polar Bear, and Huw Evans of H. Hawkline across bass, guitar, organ, and vocals. The result is an album that hums with curious, simmering ambiguity, sticking around long after it ends, quietly rearranging things.
