Any album that takes its title from a Keith Richards quote—“Friction, baby,” his answer when asked about the secret behind the durability of his partnership with Mick Jagger—starts off with a lot of promise and a big legacy to live up to.
Thankfully, Friction, Baby, the 1996 release from celebrated New Orleans alternative rockers Better Than Ezra, delivers without monkeying around.
Coming off the success of Deluxe, the band finally had a real recording budget for the first time. With producer Don Gehman (known for work with R.E.M. and Hootie & the Blowfish) at the helm, Better Than Ezra expertly blended Kevin Griffin’s Southern boy pop songwriting with the era’s heavy guitar sound.
The result is a college radio classic, led by hits like “King of New Orleans” and “Desperately Wanting.”
This special tan vinyl pressing includes a hidden track and a printed inner sleeve, fully authorized by the band. Ezralites, rejoice!
