Formed in West London in 1977, The Ruts were far more than just another punk act; they were a musical force that captured the "inner-city temperature" of a Britain in turmoil. Fronted by the soulful, snarling Malcolm Owen alongside schoolfriend and guitarist Paul Fox, the band—completed by the formidable rhythm section of Dave Ruffy and John "Segs" Jennings—rose to prominence through their heavy involvement in the Rock Against Racism movement. By the time The Crack arrived in September 1979, the band had already conquered the UK Top 10 with the incendiary "Babylon's Burning," setting the stage for one of the greatest debut albums of the era.
The Crack is celebrated for its "crystal-clear production" by Mick Glossop, which allowed the band’s unique blend of high-velocity punk and deep, simmering roots reggae to shine. Unlike the lo-fi aesthetic of many of their peers, the record is punchy, precise, and instrumentally sophisticated. It features the urgent social commentary of "S.U.S." (a critique of the controversial stop-and-search laws) and the dub-heavy masterpiece "Jah War," written in the wake of the Southall riots. From the pogo-ready energy of "Something That I Said" to the haunting atmospheric depths of "It Was Cold," the album remains as vibrant and pugnacious today as it was on its original release.
This limited 180gm heavyweight vinyl pressing faithfully replicates the original Virgin Records UK release, including the iconic cover art by John Howard that depicts the band surrounded by their 70s contemporaries. Remastered to preserve the "crystal-clear" sonic punch of the 1979 sessions, this edition is the definitive way to experience a record that Henry Rollins once described as "one of the most important ever made."
