Released in 1995 on Creation Records, Pygmalion is Slowdive’s third studio album and the final transmission of their initial era. It is a radical departure from the "wall of sound" shoegaze that defined Souvlaki, shifting instead toward a sparse, experimental landscape of ambient electronic music, post-rock, and digital looping. Primarily the vision of frontman Neil Halstead, who composed most of the material in his home studio, the album reflects a band transcending the "shoegaze" label to explore the outer reaches of sonic texture and space.
The record is defined by its "breath-like" qualities and rhythmic repetition, blending Halstead’s minimalist guitar work with haunting vocal contributions from Rachel Goswell (who co-wrote the lyrics for "Miranda" and "Visions of LA"). The striking cover art, designed by Steven Woodhouse, reinforces the album's high-art leanings; it features graphic notation by Rainer Wehinger for György Ligeti’s 1958 electronic piece Artikulation. Though it was misunderstood by critics at the time and led to the band being dropped by Creation Records shortly after its release, Pygmalion has since been re-evaluated as a visionary masterwork that paved the way for the "slowcore" and "indie-electronic" movements of the 2000s.
Modern reissues, most notably the Music On Vinyl (MOV) and Sony Legacy pressings, have finally given the album the high-fidelity treatment it demands. Pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl, these editions ensure that the delicate, low-frequency pulses and crystalline guitar delays are heard with perfect transparency.
