Second Toughest in the Infants arrived three years after Underworld’s potent debut, Dubnobasswithmyheadman.
The album opens with an opulent triptych—“Juanita,” “Kiteless,” and “To Dream of Love”—three tracks that seamlessly segue into one another to form a spectacular 16-minute Underworld-a-thon. It’s a bold statement, showcasing the trio’s willingness to indulge in sprawling sonic explorations right from the outset.
The following track, “Banstyle / Sappy’s Curry,” reinforces that adventurous spirit, clocking in at an impressive 15 minutes. This time, however, the band nose-dives into lush, atmospheric drum and bass reminiscent of LTJ Bukem’s oceanic soundscapes.
Throughout the rest of the album, Underworld alternates between balancing their driving club beats with warm, ambient textures and splashes of beatless color, and delivering straight-up heavyweight club anthems. It’s a dynamic interplay of structure and spontaneity—one that cemented Second Toughest in the Infants as a pivotal work in electronic music.
