Originally released in 2007, Fear of a Blank Planet was Porcupine Tree’s ninth studio album. It became the band’s best-selling release at the time and marked their first entry into the Billboard Top 100 in the U.S., while also charting across Europe. The album earned a Grammy nomination and was later included in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the Greatest Prog Albums of All Time.
An ambitious 50-minute suite composed of six interlinked tracks, Fear of a Blank Planet forms a cohesive conceptual whole. Inspired by Bret Easton Ellis’s novel Lunar Park, the album explores the inner world of an adolescent protagonist coping with bipolar disorder and attention-deficit issues, numbed by prescription medications and overstimulation from the Internet. Musically, the album blends expansive vocal melodies, atmospheric guitars, and turbulent drumming to mirror the character’s manic-depressive states.
The record also features guest appearances by Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Alex Lifeson (Rush), and Richard Barbieri (formerly of Japan).
