For over a decade, Spirit of the Beehive have operated as rock’s premier deconstructionists, "baby birding" samples and jagged textures into a singular, hallucinatory aesthetic. Their fifth studio album, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING, serves as the most crystallized version of this vision. Following the 2023 EP i’m so lucky—which explored the real-life breakup of members Zack Schwartz and Rivka Ravede—this record is a profound meditation on the unsteadiness that follows the end of a relationship. Despite being written across the globe, with Ravede in Portugal and Schwartz and Corey Wichlin in Philadelphia, the trio arrived at a unified, stream-of-consciousness world where chaos is carefully, brilliantly organized.

Sonically, the album is a "trick mirror" that lures the listener in with moments of "normal" rock 'n' roll before dissolving into a maelstrom of variegated synths and bleary-eyed guitars. It feels like listening to a Walkman from inside a hurricane, or the disorienting comfort of an 18-hour YouTube spiral. From the aggressive, chant-led opener "THE DISRUPTION" (featuring MSPAINT) to the ghostly, downtempo smoke cloud of "FOUND A BODY," the band manages to soften their signature "hard left turns" without losing the complexity that makes them unique. It is a record of provocations, capturing the brutality of reality and the lies we tell to protect our own hearts.

This release is available on several striking vinyl variants, including a widely available Opaque Olive Green and a highly limited "Happy Birthday" Splatter (Clear with Red & White Splatter) limited to 1,000 copies. Each variant is housed in artwork composed by Rivka Ravede, with the "chaos" of the band's aesthetic translated perfectly to the physical format.
