The theme song “You’re Dead” from the FX show What We Do in the Shadows has sparked a fresh appreciation for the singular talent of Norma Tanega — and it’s about time.

Norma was discovered singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who introduced her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was almost immediate: the title track Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog climbed to #22 on the charts.

Though the album carries folk-pop vibes, Norma Tanega wasn’t an artist meant to stay at the top for long. Her voice was unconventional, and her songs defied typical structures and meters. For example, “No Stranger Am I” is composed in an unusual 5/4 time signature.

Her songwriting was so unique that, during her North American tour supporting the album, she had to hire session musicians to perform her songs instead of relying on her original backup band, The Outsiders.

Afterward, Norma embarked on a British tour that would change her life. There, she met Dusty Springfield, sparking both an artistic and romantic relationship. This bond prompted Tanega to move to London for five years.

Following their breakup, she relocated to California and shifted toward playing percussion in more experimental musical settings. This journey reflects the same restless creativity that makes Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience even today.

To honor What We Do in the Shadows as it enters the final season of its acclaimed six-year run, we’re pressing a special green and purple vinyl edition — a perfect chance to rediscover the amazing and haunting sounds of Norma Tanega.
