Propeller, the fifth album from Guided By Voices, was originally released in 1992 as a limited edition of 500 LPs with handmade covers and blank labels, intended to be the band’s final release. Despite modest expectations, the album became a defining moment for the band, showcasing Robert Pollard’s stockpiled gems and the return of Tobin Sprout, whose increased songwriting presence helped shape the album’s distinctive sound.
From the anthemic “Over the Neptune” to the effortlessly melodic closer “On the Tundra,” Propeller captures the raw, lo-fi energy that would cement GBV’s legacy in indie rock. Its innovative, economical production and handmade charm helped it stand out, making it one of the most important releases in the band’s discography.
This reissue features new cover art for both vinyl and CD, and for the first time, the album is also available on cassette, bringing this essential indie classic back into circulation.
