Written and produced by Devonté Hynes, Freetown Sound is a tour de force—a confluence of Hynes’ past, present, and future that melds his diverse influences with his established musical voice to create a delightful slice of thought-provoking pop. Taking its name from the capital of Sierra Leone where Hynes’ father was born, the album is both profoundly personal and unapologetically political. Across 17 shimmering tracks, it navigates complex themes of race, religion, sex, and sexism, functioning like a piece of theater that evokes unexpected communions of moods and eras.

The record is a masterclass in collaboration and sampling, unspooling like an ornate mixtape. Hynes’ "slinky" R&B and elastic funk are bolstered by an incredible cast of guests, including Carly Rae Jepsen, Nelly Furtado, Empress Of, and Debbie Harry, alongside spoken-word contributions from figures like Ta-Nehisi Coates and trans activist Venus Xtravaganza (via Paris Is Burning samples). From the gospel-infused opening of "By Ourselves" to the infectious, 80s-indebted groove of "E.V.P." and the hauntingly beautiful "Augustine," the album transcends the concept of a "solo record" to become a communal exploration of existence.
