They recorded twenty-two songs and cut it down to ten, thirty-seven minutes total, which for a band that reformed in 2012 and has spent the years since making progressively heavier and stranger records is a notable act of discipline.

Greg Dulli's writing has always run on the same fuel: desire, guilt, and the suspicion that the two are indistinguishable. Here it plays against arrangements that swing between grinding rock and something closer to Memphis R&B, which is the trick this band has always pulled better than their peers. "Jungle Roux" opens it hard. "House Of I" and "Duvateen" were the singles. "My Lover" and "The Deepest Part Of The Darkest Shadow" work the slow burn where Dulli does his best work, and "Memphis, Texas" names the geography the whole catalogue has always occupied. It was recorded across studios including Fireside Sound in Joshua Tree and Marigny Studios in New Orleans, with Petra Haden on vocals and violin, Bo Koster of My Morning Jacket, and a cameo from former drummer Patrick Keeler.

Very few bands from the early nineties are making their best late work. This one keeps arguing the case, and Soft Control is tight enough that the argument lands quickly.
