moebius-renziehausen-ersatz
Mœbius & Renziehausen - Ersatz

A genuine left turn, and one of the most quietly surprising records in the entire Moebius catalog. Originally released on the Pinpoint label in 1990 as Ersatz, Replacement marked Dieter Moebius' first release in four years since the Blue Moon soundtrack and announced a sharp swerve into entirely new sonic territory. His collaborator this time was Karl Renziehausen, a visual artist and constructor of sound sculptures who was a fringe member of the Forst/Weser Uplands creative community that Moebius shared with Michael Rother, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and others. Renziehausen's profound understanding of computers was precisely what drew Moebius toward him, and the partnership resulted in something that sounds quite unlike anything Moebius had previously made.

The album distances itself deliberately from the existing Moebius collaborations with Conny Plank and Gerd Beerbohm, and only sporadic echoes of Cluster and Harmonia surface throughout its nine tracks. This is Moebius cautiously reconnoitering the digital world, trading the analog warmth of his earlier records for purely digital tones and almost dancefloor-friendly rhythms, while retaining the helplessly experimental streak that makes everything he touched so distinctive. Stripped-down, punchy machine rhythms push the duo through a spectrum of slow-moving science fiction and Krautrock-inflected synth sounds, acknowledging the industrial and left-of-centre dance music worlds of the era while remaining unmistakably on their own peculiar path. As Asmus Tietchens described it in his liner notes: "Adventures in sound, a world brought to life by the most remarkable characters and atmospheres." There is an exactness to the music, seven little musical comedies with different plots, much as if written for the theater, each one following its own internal logic with rigorous precision.

Reissued by Bureau B and mastered from the original tapes with liner notes by Asmus Tietchens, pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0633/5024/3490/files/moebius-renziehausen---ersatz_1920x1920_bbb13862-ae66-4e5a-afdf-b2e9a7bf79c8.jpg?v=1782084579
