Peter Katis produced, with Gareth Jones stepping in to mix four of the tracks, and the result is cold and architectural in a way none of the band's later records quite match. \"Untitled\" opens it, a song Kessler wrote specifically to open their live shows. \"Obstacle 1\" and \"PDA\" are the ones that move. \"NYC\" earns every bit of its reputation. \"Leif Erikson\" closes the thing in near-silence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt barely charted on release, peaking at 158 on the Billboard 200, but it spent seventy-three weeks on the independent albums chart and it was named the best album of the year by the most influential outlet covering that scene. Two decades on it sits on essentially every serious list of the era, and its DNA runs through the Killers, Editors, the xx, and a long tail of bands that got called Interpol clones for their trouble.
