Continuing without him did not feel right, and eventually they started over entirely, with Sergio Vega of Quicksand stepping in on bass. What came out of that decision, released in May 2010 and debuting at number six on the Billboard 200, is the most life-affirming record the band has ever made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThat is the surprise of it. Written in the shadow of the worst thing that had ever happened to them, Diamond Eyes is enormous and generous rather than bleak. The title track opens on one of Stephen Carpenter's heaviest riffs and then lifts into something almost euphoric. \"Rocket Skates\" and \"You've Seen The Butcher\" are pure momentum. \"Sextape\" and \"Beauty School\" occupy the shoegaze-adjacent register that has since become the band's most beloved mode, all reverb and drift with Chino Moreno singing over the top of it. Nick Raskulinecz produced and gave the album more air than anything since White Pony, and Frank Delgado's samples do more structural work here than on any Deftones record before it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eCheng died in 2013 without ever regaining full consciousness.
