When two best friends start a band, their songs naturally fill with inside jokes. In My Head takes listeners on a journey through Andreya Casablanca and Laura Lee's friendship, their lives, and deeper into the world of GURR. The duo met in an American Studies class in Berlin, and after spending time together in the U.S., the West Coast sound became a clear influence. But their debut album draws from a wide array of pop culture references and personal experiences beyond that.
Themes range from confronting one’s own ignorance (as explored in the first single, “Moby Dick”), to letting go and having nights that blur into mornings (“Breathless”), or processing heartbreak through someone else’s perspective (“Yosemite”). Rather than recounting events as they happened, Andreya and Laura create a world of characters, stories, and emotions that listeners can relate to—and reinterpret in their own minds.
They call their genre First Wave Gurrlcore—a term that nods to riot grrrl culture while making clear they’re forging their own path. On their debut, GURR blend straightforward garage rock with elements of psychedelia and new wave, creating a sound that's both raw and vibrant.
“We didn’t start making music because of Kathleen Hanna,” explains singer Andreya Casablanca. “Musically, we were more influenced by bands like Gun Club, Echo & the Bunnymen, the B-52s, or classics like the Ramones and the Beatles.”
